How the EMI formula works
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment - the fixed amount you pay the bank every month until the loan ends. Each EMI has two parts: some goes toward the principal (the money you borrowed) and some toward the interest (the bank's charge for lending). The formula is:

Step-by-step example
Take a loan of ₹10,00,000 at 9% per year for 20 years.
- Monthly rate: r = 9 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.0075
- Number of months: n = 20 × 12 = 240
- Compute (1 + r)n = (1.0075)240 = 6.009
- Top of formula: P × r × 6.009 = 10,00,000 × 0.0075 × 6.009 = 45,067
- Bottom of formula: 6.009 − 1 = 5.009
- EMI = 45,067 ÷ 5.009 = ₹8,997 per month
Over 240 months you pay about ₹21,59,342 in total - so roughly ₹11,59,342 is interest on top of the ₹10,00,000 you borrowed.
