Seating Arrangement Reasoning Questions and Answers (Solved MCQs)

Updated:July 16, 202632 Mins Read

Seating arrangement looks heavy because the paper gives you eight lines of information at once. It is not heavy, it is just slow if you start at the first line. Read all the clues once, then start with the clue that fixes a person to a definite seat, never with a clue that says someone sits somewhere near someone. Fix the definite ones first, then build around them. The one thing that decides your marks here is direction. If a person faces the centre, his left is your right, and if he faces outward, his left is your left. Get that reversal wrong and every seat after it collapses. Draw the diagram in pencil, keep the unsure clues in a corner as possibilities, and check every clue again at the end before you mark.

Seating Arrangement Rules and Shortcuts

Direction decides everything
Facing the centre, his left is your right and his right is your left. Clockwise is to his right.
Facing outward, his left is your left and his right is your right. Clockwise is to his left.
Write the facing direction on the diagram before you place anyone.

The order to solve in
Read every clue first. Place the definite ones, then the ones that depend on them, and keep the vague ones for the end.

Counting positions
Third to the left of A means count three seats from A, and A is not counted.
Third from the left end means A is the third seat, counting the end seat as one.

Immediate versus not immediate
To the left of A means anywhere on that side. Immediately to the left, adjacent, or neighbour means the very next seat.

Circular arrangement
For n people facing the centre, the person opposite seat number x sits at x + n ÷ 2, subtracting n if it crosses n. Works only when n is even.

Linear arrangement
Position from the left end + Position from the right end = n + 1
Number of people between two positions = Difference of the positions − 1

Two rows facing each other
Position 3 from the left in Row 1 faces position 3 from the right in Row 2. Fix this mapping once and use it throughout.

Before you mark
Check every clue against your final diagram. If one clue does not fit, the whole set is wrong.

60 Seating Arrangement Reasoning Questions and Answers (Solved MCQs)

Seating Arrangement Reasoning Test: Linear Seating Arrangements

Question 1. In a row of students facing North, A is 18th from the left end. B sits to the right of A with exactly seven students between them. If B is 12th from the right end, how many students are in the row?

a) 35
b) 36
c) 37
d) 38

Answer:

c) 37 — Since seven students sit between A and B, B is eight positions to the right of A. Therefore, B is 18 + 8 = 26th from the left. Total students = 26 + 12 – 1 = 37.

Question 2. In a row of 40 people, P is 11th from the left end and Q is 16th from the right end. How many people sit between P and Q?

a) 11
b) 12
c) 13
d) 14

Answer:

c) 13 — Q’s position from the left is 40 – 16 + 1 = 25. Therefore, the number of people between P and Q is 25 – 11 – 1 = 13.

Question 3. A is 15th from the left end of a row, while B is 20th from the right end. After they interchange positions, A becomes 25th from the left end. What is B’s new position from the right end?

a) 28th
b) 29th
c) 30th
d) 31st

Answer:

c) 30th — After interchanging, A occupies B’s original position, which is 25th from the left. Since B was originally 20th from the right, the total number of people is 25 + 20 – 1 = 44. B now occupies A’s original position, which was 15th from the left. Therefore, B’s position from the right is 44 – 15 + 1 = 30th.

Question 4. Six people A, B, C, D, E and F sit in a row facing North. D sits immediately to the left of A. B sits second to the left of A. C sits immediately to the right of E. F sits at the left end and to the left of B. Who sits third to the right of B?

a) A
b) C
c) D
d) E

Answer:

d) E — The only valid arrangement from left to right is F, B, D, A, E, C. The person sitting third to the right of B is E.

Question 5. Eleven people sit in a row facing North. R sits exactly in the middle. P sits third to the left of R, while Q sits second to the right of R. How many people sit between P and Q?

a) 3
b) 4
c) 5
d) 6

Answer:

b) 4 — In a row of 11 people, the middle position is sixth. Therefore, R is sixth, P is third and Q is eighth from the left. The people in positions 4, 5, 6 and 7 sit between P and Q, giving a total of four.

Question 6. Twenty-three people sit in a row facing South. B is ninth from the left end. A sits fourth to the right of B. What is A’s position from the right end?

a) 17th
b) 18th
c) 19th
d) 20th

Answer:

c) 19th — Since everyone faces South, B’s right side is towards the physical left of the row. Therefore, A is four positions to the left of B and occupies the fifth position from the left. A’s position from the right is 23 – 5 + 1 = 19th.

Question 7. In a row facing North, M sits 12th from the left and N sits 18th from the right. If exactly nine people sit between them and M is to the left of N, how many people are in the row?

a) 38
b) 39
c) 40
d) 41

Answer:

b) 39 — With nine people between them, N is ten positions to the right of M. Thus, N is 12 + 10 = 22nd from the left. Since N is also 18th from the right, the total number is 22 + 18 – 1 = 39.

Question 8. A student is 17th from the left end and 24th from the right end of a row. How many students are in the row?

a) 39
b) 40
c) 41
d) 42

Answer:

b) 40 — Total students = position from the left + position from the right – 1 = 17 + 24 – 1 = 40.

Question 9. In a row of students facing North, A is eighth from the left and B is thirteenth from the left. How many students sit between A and B?

a) 3
b) 4
c) 5
d) 6

Answer:

b) 4 — The difference between their positions is 13 – 8 = 5. Therefore, the number of students between them is 5 – 1 = 4.

Question 10. A is sixth from the left end of a row. B sits to the right of A with ten people between them. If B is ninth from the right end, how many people are in the row?

a) 23
b) 24
c) 25
d) 26

Answer:

c) 25 — With ten people between them, B is eleven positions to the right of A. Hence, B is 6 + 11 = 17th from the left. Total people = 17 + 9 – 1 = 25.

Question 11. A is 14th from the left end, and B is 17th from the right end. After they exchange positions, A becomes 22nd from the left. What is B’s new position from the right end?

a) 23rd
b) 24th
c) 25th
d) 26th

Answer:

c) 25th — A’s new position is B’s original position, so B was 22nd from the left and 17th from the right. Thus, the row contains 22 + 17 – 1 = 38 people. B now occupies A’s original 14th position from the left. Therefore, B is 38 – 14 + 1 = 25th from the right.

Question 12. Seven people P, Q, R, S, T, U and V sit in a row facing North. S sits in the middle. P sits immediately to the left of S. Q sits second to the right of P. R sits at the left end, and T sits immediately to the right of R. V sits at the right end. Who sits second to the right of Q?

a) 1
b) 2
c) 3
d) 4

Answer:

b) 2 — In a row of 26 people, the two central positions are 13th and 14th. The left central position is 13th, so N is 13th from the left. M is tenth, leaving the people in positions 11 and 12 between them.

Question 14. A is 12th from the right end of a row. B is eighth from the left end, and A sits to the right of B with exactly five people between them. How many people are in the row?

a) 23
b) 24
c) 25
d) 26

Answer:

c) 25 — With five people between B and A, A is six positions to the right of B. Therefore, A is 8 + 6 = 14th from the left. Total people = 14 + 12 – 1 = 25.

Question 15. Eight people A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H sit in a row facing North. H sits at the left end, and D sits immediately to the right of H. Question 50. Ten people sit around a circular table facing outward. B sits fourth to the right of A, while C sits opposite A. What is C’s position relative to B?

a) Immediately to the right
b) Immediately to the left
c) Second to the right
d) Third to the left

Answer:

a) Immediately to the right — For outward-facing people, right is clockwise. B is four seats clockwise from A, while C, being opposite A, is five seats clockwise from A. Therefore, C sits immediately to the right of B.

Question 51. Five people A, B, C, D and E sit in a North-facing row. C sits in the middle, B immediately to the left of C, D immediately to the right of C, A at the left end and E at the right end. In the opposite South-facing row, R sits opposite C, Q immediately to the right of R, S immediately to the left of R, and P sits opposite A. Who sits opposite D?

a) P
b) Q
c) R
d) S

Answer:

d) S — The first row is A, B, C, D, E. R occupies the middle position opposite C. Since R faces South, its left side is towards the physical right, placing S opposite D. Therefore, S sits opposite D.

Question 52. In a circular arrangement, A is seventh clockwise from B and also ninth anticlockwise from B. How many people are seated in the circle?

a) 14
b) 15
c) 16

Question 54. A is 18th from the left end of a row, and B is 25th from the right end. After A and B exchange positions, A becomes 32nd from the left. What is B’s new position from the right?

a) 37th
b) 38th
c) 39th
d) 40th

Answer:

c) 39th — A’s new position is B’s original position, so B was 32nd from the left and 25th from the right. The row therefore contains 32 + 25 – 1 = 56 people. B now occupies A’s original 18th position from the left. Hence, B is 56 – 18 + 1 = 39th from the right.
