Blood Relations Reasoning Questions and Answers(Solved MCQs)

19 Mins Read

Blood relations is a chapter where you do not need a single formula, you need a pen. Students try to solve these in their head and that is exactly why they get them wrong. Draw the family tree, always. Put the older generation on top, the younger below, and mark male with a plus and female with a minus so you never mix up who is the son and who is the daughter. The second trap is language. In Hindi we say mama and chacha and the relation is instantly clear, but the paper says maternal uncle and paternal uncle, so learn those English terms cold. Solve the statement one sentence at a time from the last name backwards, and these questions become the fastest marks in the reasoning section.

Blood Relations Rules and Shortcuts

Read the sentence backwards
In a sentence like “Pointing to a man, Ravi said, he is the son of my mother’s only brother”, start from the last relation and walk back to Ravi.

Mother’s only brother = maternal uncle. His son = Ravi’s cousin.

Never start from the front, you will lose the thread.

Draw the tree the same way every time
Same generation side by side, older generation above, younger generation below.

Male = + and Female = −
Married couple = double line between them
Brother or sister = single line between them
Parent to child = vertical line downward

Generation count
Same generation: brother, sister, husband, wife, cousin, brother-in-law, sister-in-law

One generation up: father, mother, uncle, aunt, father-in-law, mother-in-law
One generation down: son, daughter, nephew, niece, son-in-law, daughter-in-law
Two generations up: grandfather, grandmother
Two generations down: grandson, granddaughter

The relations students confuse most
Father’s brother = paternal uncle (chacha)
Mother’s brother = maternal uncle (mama)
Father’s sister = paternal aunt (bua)
Mother’s sister = maternal aunt (mausi)
Uncle’s or aunt’s child = cousin, and cousin has no gender, so the paper must tell you if it is a boy or girl
Brother’s or sister’s son = nephew
Brother’s or sister’s daughter = niece
Sister’s husband or husband’s brother or wife’s brother = brother-in-law
Brother’s wife or husband’s sister or wife’s sister = sister-in-law
Grandfather’s or grandmother’s only son = your father, if no other son is mentioned

The only son or only daughter trick
“My mother’s only son” means the speaker himself, if the speaker is male.

“My father’s only daughter” means the speaker herself, if the speaker is female.

Check the gender of the speaker before you answer. This single line decides half these questions.

Coded blood relations
When the paper gives symbols, decode them one by one and write the meaning above each symbol.

A + B means A is the father of B
A − B means A is the wife of B
A × B means A is the brother of B
A ÷ B means A is the mother of B

The symbols change from paper to paper, so read the key given in that question, never assume.

Reading the coded chain
In P + Q − R, solve left to right in pairs.

P + Q means P is the father of Q. Q − R means Q is the wife of R. So P is the father-in-law of R.

Generation gap shortcut for puzzles
If a puzzle asks how a person is related to another and the answer options include maternal and paternal versions, trace which parent the link passes through. Link through the mother gives maternal, link through the father gives paternal.
