Partnership Formulas

Simple partnership, when the time is the same for everyone

Profit is shared in the ratio of the investments.
Profit ratio of A and B = Investment of A : Investment of B

Compound partnership, when the time is different

Profit is shared in the ratio of the capital multiplied by the time.
Profit ratio of A and B = (Investment of A × Months of A) : (Investment of B × Months of B)

This product is called the capital month. Everything in the chapter comes out of it.

Finding a partner’s share

Share of a partner = Total profit × (His ratio term ÷ Sum of all ratio terms)

When a partner withdraws or adds money in between

Split his investment period into parts and add up the capital months.
So if A puts in 5000 for 4 months and then 8000 for the next 8 months, his capital month = (5000 × 4) + (8000 × 8) = 84000

Common Partnership Mistakes to Avoid

Using capital ratio when the times differ
Capital ratio equals profit ratio only when everyone invests for the same time.

If the periods differ, use capital × time (the capital-month) for each partner.

Forgetting to split the period after a withdrawal or addition
If A puts in ₹5,000 for 4 months and then ₹8,000 for 8 months, add the parts: (5,000 × 4) + (8,000 × 8). Do not use just the final amount for the whole year.

Splitting the wrong amount after salary, commission or interest
Pay out salary, commission or interest on capital first, then share only the remaining profit in the agreed ratio. Add the salary or commission back to that partner’s share at the end.

Sharing the whole profit when charity is deducted
When part of the profit goes to charity, split the remaining profit, not the total. So with 15% to charity, partners share 0.85 of the profit.

Mixing up sacrifice and gain ratio at admission or retirement
On admission, old partners give up a share (sacrifice ratio). On retirement, remaining partners gain a share (gain ratio). Track which partner loses or gains before writing the new ratio.

Treating loss sharing differently from profit
Unless told otherwise, losses are shared in the same ratio as profits.

a) I alone sufficient
b) II alone sufficient
c) Both together sufficient, neither alone

Question 49. A invests ₹40,000; after 3 months withdraws ₹10,000; after next 5 months adds ₹20,000. B invests ₹50,000 for 12 months. Total profit is ₹21,400. B’s share is:

a) ₹9,400
b) ₹10,000
c) ₹12,000
d) ₹14,000

Answer:

c) ₹12,000 — A = 40×3 + 30×5 + 50×4 = 470; B = 50×12 = 600 ⇒ 47:60.

Question 50. A and B share profits 3 : 2. C is admitted for 1/5 share and pays premium ₹10,000, shared by A and B in old ratio. Total profit is ₹50,000. A’s total receipt (profit + premium) is:

a) ₹24,000
b) ₹26,000
c) ₹28,000
d) ₹30,000

Answer:

d) ₹30,000 — New ratio A:B:C = 12:8:5. A profit = 50,000×12/25 = 24,000; premium share = 10,000×3/5 = 6,000.

Question 51. A and B invest ₹60,000 and ₹40,000. A is a managing partner and gets 10% commission on total profit. Total profit is ₹55,000. A’s total receipt is:

a) ₹33,000
b) ₹35,200
c) ₹37,500
d) ₹40,000

Answer:

b) ₹35,200 — Commission = 5,500; remaining 49,500 split 3:2 ⇒ A = 29,700; total = 29,700 + 5,500.
