Ratio & Proportion Formulas (Quick Reference)

Symbols (used below):

  • a, b, c, x, y, z = quantities/numbers/ages/amounts
  • k = constant of proportionality
  • m:n = ratio (m parts to n parts)
  • Total = sum of all parts
  • % = percent (p% = p/100)
  • P = profit, I = investment, T = time (months/years)
  • LCM = least common multiple, HCF = highest common factor
  • | | = absolute value

1) Basics of Ratio

  • a:b = m:n means a/b = m/n
  • If a:b = m:n, then a = km and b = kn (k is a constant)
  • Comparison: a:b = c:d ⇔ ad = bc

2) Ratio After Percentage Change

  • If A increases by p%: A’ = A × (1 + p/100)
  • If A decreases by p%: A’ = A × (1 − p/100)
  • New ratio: A’:B’ = [A × (1 ± p/100)] : [B × (1 ± q/100)]

3) Dividing a Quantity in a Given Ratio

  • If total S is divided in ratio m:n: shares are S×m/(m+n) and S×n/(m+n)
  • If total S is divided in ratio m:n:p: shares are S×m/(m+n+p), S×n/(m+n+p), S×p/(m+n+p)
  • Parts method: 1 part = S ÷ (sum of parts)

4) Combining Ratios (Linking / Chain Rule)

  • If a:b = m:n and b:c = p:q, then make b same:
    a:b:c = (m×p) : (n×p) : (n×q)
  • If x:y = m:n and y:z = p:q, then x:z = (m×p) : (n×q)

5) Two Numbers in Ratio with Sum or Difference

  • If numbers are in ratio m:n, take them as m k and n k
  • If sum is S: (m+n)k = S ⇒ k = S/(m+n)
  • If difference is D: |m−n|k = D ⇒ k = D/|m−n|

6) Ages (Ratio Before & After Years)

  • If present ages are mk and nk: A = mk, B = nk
  • After t years: A+t and B+t
  • After t years ratio becomes p:q: (mk+t)/(nk+t) = p/q

7) Mixtures (Adding or Replacing)

  • If milk:water = m:n, then milk = mk, water = nk, total = (m+n)k
  • After adding water w: new ratio = milk : (water + w)
  • After adding milk w: new ratio = (milk + w) : water
  • Replacement (remove r and add r): component left = original × (1 − r/Total)

8) Proportion & Variation

  • Direct proportion: x ∝ y ⇒ x = ky ⇒ x₁/x₂ = y₁/y₂
  • Inverse proportion: x ∝ 1/y ⇒ x = k/y ⇒ x₁/x₂ = y₂/y₁
  • Direct & inverse together: x ∝ y/z ⇒ x = k(y/z) ⇒ x₁/x₂ = (y₁/y₂) × (z₂/z₁)

9) Work / Machines / Workers (Proportion Model)

  • Work = (workers) × (days) × (rate per worker per day)
  • Same work, same rate: W₁D₁ = W₂D₂ (workers × days is constant)
  • Machines–Days–Units: Units ∝ (machines × days) ⇒ U₂ = U₁ × (M₂/M₁) × (D₂/D₁)

10) Time & Work (Using Rates)

  • If A finishes in x days: rate(A) = 1/x
  • If B finishes in y days: rate(B) = 1/y
  • Together time: 1/T = 1/x + 1/y ⇒ T = (xy)/(x+y)

11) Partnership (Profit Sharing)

  • Profit share ∝ (Investment × Time)
  • If A invests I₁ for T₁ and B invests I₂ for T₂: P₁:P₂ = (I₁T₁):(I₂T₂)
  • Changing investment mid-way: split time blocks and add:
    A effective = I×t + I’×t’

12) Alligation / Mixing Two Percent Solutions

  • To mix C₁% and C₂% to get C%: ratio = (C₂ − C) : (C − C₁)
  • Works for concentration, profit %, marks %, sugar %, acid %

13) LCM–HCF with Numbers in Ratio

  • If numbers are m k and n k (and m, n are coprime):
  • HCF = k
  • LCM = mnk
  • Also: (Number 1) × (Number 2) = HCF × LCM

14) Useful Ratio Transformations

  • (a+b):(b+c) when a:b and b:c known:
first convert to a:b:c then compute (a+b) and (b+c)
  • After transfer/add/subtract: write new amounts, then take ratio
