Time and Distance Formulas (Quick Reference)
1) Core Formulas
- Speed: v = d ÷ t
- Distance: d = v × t
- Time: t = d ÷ v
2) Unit Conversions
- km/h to m/s: v(m/s) = v(km/h) × 5 ÷ 18
- m/s to km/h: v(km/h) = v(m/s) × 18 ÷ 5
- Time: 1 h = 60 min, 1 min = 60 s
3) Average Speed
- General: vavg = (Total distance) ÷ (Total time)
- Equal distances at speeds v₁, v₂: vavg = (2v₁v₂) ÷ (v₁ + v₂)
- Different time segments: vavg = (v₁t₁ + v₂t₂ + …) ÷ (t₁ + t₂ + …)
- Including rest: vavg = (Total distance) ÷ (Travel time + Rest time)
4) Speed Change & Time Change (Same Distance)
- Inverse relation: t₁ ÷ t₂ = v₂ ÷ v₁
- % change in time (speed v₁ → v₂): %Δt = ((v₁ ÷ v₂) − 1) × 100
- Time difference equation: (D ÷ v₁) − (D ÷ v₂) = Δt
5) Relative Speed
- Same direction: vrel = |v₁ − v₂|
- Opposite direction: vrel = v₁ + v₂
- Meeting/Catching time: t = (Distance gap) ÷ vrel
- Delayed start catch-up: t = (vslow × Δt) ÷ (vfast − vslow)
6) Trains (Length Problems)
- Passing a pole: t = L ÷ v
- Passing a platform: t = (Ltrain + Lplatform) ÷ v
- Overtaking (same direction): t = (L₁ + L₂) ÷ (v₁ − v₂)
- Crossing (opposite direction): t = (L₁ + L₂) ÷ (v₁ + v₂)
7) Boats & Streams
- Downstream speed: vd = vb + vs
- Upstream speed: vu = vb − vs
- Boat speed (still water): vb = (vd + vu) ÷ 2
- Stream speed: vs = (vd − vu) ÷ 2
- Down + up time (same distance D): t = D ÷ (vb + vs) + D ÷ (vb − vs)
8) Circular Track / Races
- Meet again (same start, same direction): t = 1 ÷ |(1 ÷ T₁) − (1 ÷ T₂)|
- One full lap ahead: t = (T₁T₂) ÷ (T₂ − T₁) (T₁ < T₂)
9) Right-Angle Movement
- Resultant distance: d = √(x² + y²)
10) Probability (Random Arrival)
- Probability: P = (Favourable interval) ÷ (Total interval)
