Answer Key with Hints

A. Place Value Beyond Ones

    • Answer: (a) 1000 (b) 100 (c) 10 (d) 100 (e) 1000
    • Hint: 1 unit = 10 tenths = 100 hundredths = 1000 thousandths. So scale up or down by powers of 10.
    • Answer: (a) 7.05 (b) 30.42 (c) 12.908
    • Hint: Ones go before the decimal point. Tenths/hundredths/thousandths go after it in that order.
    • Answer: 42.507 = 4 tens + 2 ones + 5 tenths + 0 hundredths + 7 thousandths = 40 + 2 + 0.5 + 0.007
    • Hint: Write each digit with its place value: tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths.
    • Answer:
      1. 15.03 = “Fifteen point zero three” OR “Fifteen and three hundredths”
      2. 0.254 = “Zero point two five four” OR “Two hundred fifty-four thousandths”
      3. 9.08 = “Nine point zero eight” OR “Nine and eight hundredths”
    • Hint: After the decimal point, read digit-by-digit (point form) or treat the last place as a fraction (hundredths/thousandths).

B. Conversions Using Decimals

    • Answer: (a) 0.465 kg (b) 0.068 kg (c) 1.560 kg
    • Hint: Since 1 kg = 1000 g, divide grams by 1000 (move decimal 3 places left).
    • Answer: (a) 560 g (b) 2500 g (c) 7 g
    • Hint: Multiply kilograms by 1000 (move decimal 3 places right).
    • Answer: (a) 7.0 cm (b) 9 mm (c) 13.4 cm (d) 2036 mm
    • Hint: 10 mm = 1 cm, so mm → cm divide by 10, and cm → mm multiply by 10.
    • Answer: (a) 0.36 m (b) 0.50 m (c) 89 cm (d) 0.04 m (e) 3.25 m (f) 207 cm
    • Hint: 1 m = 100 cm. cm → m divide by 100; m → cm multiply by 100.
    • Answer: (a) 1000 mm (b) 10,00,000 mm
    • Hint: 1 m = 100 cm and 1 cm = 10 mm, so 1 m = 1000 mm. Then 1 km = 1000 m, so multiply by 1000 again.

C. Money Decimals (Rupees and Paise)

    • Answer:
      1. 45 paise = ₹0.45
      2. Total = 1,00,000 × 0.45 = ₹45,000
    • Hint: 100 paise = ₹1, so divide paise by 100 to get rupees, then multiply by number of passengers.

D. Comparing and Ordering Decimals

    • Answer: (a) 0.010 < 0.1 (b) 0.09 < 0.100 (c) 1.005 < 1.05 (d) 2.3 = 2.30 (e) 2.30 = 2.300
    • Hint: Add trailing zeroes to compare: 0.1 = 0.100, 2.3 = 2.300. Then compare digit by digit from left to right.
    • Answer: 3.006 < 3.06 < 3.6 = 3.60 = 3.600
    • Hint: Write all numbers to 3 decimal places: 3.006, 3.060, 3.600, 3.600, 3.600 and compare.
    • Answer: Closest to 5.26 is 5.27 (difference 0.01). 5.25 is 0.01 away too, so both 5.25 and 5.27 are equally close; among given choices, 5.27 and 5.25 tie.
    • Hint: Compare distance from 5.26 by subtraction: |5.27−5.26|, |5.205−5.26|, |5.25−5.26|.

E. Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

    • Answer: (a) 3.43 (b) 11.70 (c) 30.00
    • Hint: Line up decimal points and add place-wise (tenths with tenths, hundredths with hundredths).
    • Answer: (a) 3.03 (b) 10.64
    • Hint: Line up decimal points; borrow carefully across the decimal if needed.
    • Answer: 1.25 − 0.37 = 0.88 m
    • Hint: Convert both to hundredths: 1.25 = 125/100 and 0.37 = 37/100, then subtract, or subtract directly with decimal alignment.
    • Answer: 2.5 + 0.68 + 0.254 = 3.434 kg
    • Hint: Write 2.5 as 2.500, then add column-wise: 2.500 + 0.680 + 0.254.
    • Answer:
      1. Total = 125.75 + 84.50 = ₹210.25
      2. Change = 500.00 − 210.25 = ₹289.75
    • Hint: Treat money like decimals: rupees are the whole part, paise are the decimal part (hundredths).

F. Fractions to Decimals and a Smart Puzzle

    • Answer: (a) 3/4 = 0.75 (b) 1/5 = 0.2 (c) 3/2 = 1.5 (d) 4/5 = 0.8
    • Hint: Convert to denominator 10 or 100 when possible (like 1/5 = 2/10). Or just divide numerator by denominator.
    • Answer: One valid filling is 7.89 + 2.61 = 10.50
    • Hint: Think of making 10.50 as (10 + 0.50). Choose two decimals whose fractional parts add to 0.50, then adjust whole parts to sum to 10. Keep digits in boxes non-repeating.
