Updated:January 16, 20265 Mins Read

Here we are presenting the worksheet for chapter 10 – The Other Side of Zero. We have selected questions from all sections of the chapter. Attempt this worksheet after you complete solving all the exercises.

Class 6 Maths Worksheet (NCERT) – Chapter 10: The Other Side of Zero

Section A: Integers around us (floors, temperature, time)

  1. In a building, Floor 0 is the ground floor. Floors above are positive and floors below are negative.
    Write the floor numbers:
    (a) 4 floors above ground = ________
    (b) 3 floors below ground = ________
    (c) Ground floor = ________
  2. A lift is at Floor −2. It goes up by +5 floors. Where does it reach?
    Final floor = ________
  3. Temperature at 6 a.m. is −4°C. By noon it becomes +7°C.
    (a) What is the change in temperature? ________
    (b) Is it a rise or a fall? ________
  4. Match the situation with the correct integer:
    (a) 8 metres below ground level
    (b) 12 metres above ground level
    (c) No gain, no loss (exactly at reference)
    Options: +12, 0, −8

Section B: Ordering integers and understanding zero

  1. Arrange in increasing order:
    0, −6, +4, −1, +9, −10
  2. Fill with < or > :
    (a) −3 ____ +2
    (b) −7 ____ −2
    (c) 0 ____ −1
    (d) +5 ____ +1
  3. Write the additive inverse of each integer:
    (a) +18 → ________
    (b) −35 → ________
    (c) 0 → ________
    (d) −1 → ________
  4. Write four integers between −3 and +3 (excluding −3 and +3).
    Answer: __________________________

Section C: “Starting + Movement = Target” (number line thinking)

  1. Starting Position = −5, Movement = +12
    Target Position = ________
  2. Target Position = −3, Starting Position = +2
    Movement needed = Target − Starting = ________
  3. Fill the missing integer:
    (a) (−8) + ____ = −15
    (b) (+9) + ____ = −2
  4. A diver is at −6 m (below sea level). He rises by +9 m.
What is his new position relative to sea level? ________

Section D: Addition & subtraction of integers (including “subtract = add inverse”)

  1. Evaluate:
    (a) (−7) + (+12) = ________
    (b) (+5) + (−8) = ________
    (c) (−9) + (−4) = ________
  2. Convert subtraction into addition by adding the inverse, then evaluate:
    (a) (+7) − (−5) = (+7) + (____) = ________
    (b) (−3) − (+8) = (−3) + (____) = ________
    (c) (+8) − (−2) = (+8) + (____) = ________
  3. Evaluate:
    (a) (−8) − (−4) = ________
    (b) (+9) − (+12) = ________
    (c) (−5) − (+7) = ________
  4. Find the missing integer:
    (a) (−3) − ____ = −8
    (b) (+6) − ____ = +10

Section E: Token model & border-sum puzzle

  1. A pocket has 9 positive tokens and 14 negative tokens.
After cancelling all zero pairs, what integer remains? ________
  2. To do (+5) − (+6) using tokens, you “add a zero pair” first.
    (a) Why does adding a zero pair not change the value? (1 line)
    Answer: _______________________________________________
  3. Border Sum Grid: In this 3×3 hollow grid, the border sum means:
Top row sum = Bottom row sum = Left column sum = Right column sum.
The required border sum is −6. Find the missing numbers x and y.

    −2 +5 −9
    x   y
    −1 −8 +3

    x = ________ , y = ________

  4. A student says: “Zero is positive because it has no minus sign.”
Is the statement True or False? ________
Write the correct fact in one line: ________________________________________

Answer Key – Class 6 Maths (NCERT) Chapter 10: The Other Side of Zero

  1. (a) +4 (b) −3 (c) 0
  2. −2 + 5 = +3
  3. (a) Change = +11°C (because −4 to +7 is a rise of 11) (b) Rise
  4. (a) −8 (b) +12 (c) 0
  5. Increasing order: −10, −6, −1, 0, +4, +9
  6. (a) −3 < +2 (b) −7 < −2 (c) 0 > −1 (d) +5 > +1
  7. (a) −18 (b) +35 (c) 0 (d) +1
  8. Any correct set: −2, −1, 0, +1, +2 (any four of these)
  9. Target = −5 + 12 = +7
  10. Movement = −3 − (+2) = −3 − 2 = −5
  11. (a) −8 + ____ = −15 ⇒ ____ = −7
    (b) +9 + ____ = −2 ⇒ ____ = −11
  12. −6 + 9 = +3 m (3 m above sea level)
  13. (a) −7 + 12 = +5
    (b) +5 + (−8) = −3
    (c) −9 + (−4) = −13
  14. (a) (+7) − (−5) = (+7) + (+5) = +12
    (b) (−3) − (+8) = (−3) + (−8) = −11
    (c) (+8) − (−2) = (+8) + (+2) = +10
  15. (a) (−8) − (−4) = (−8) + (+4) = −4
    (b) +9 − +12 = −3
    (c) −5 − +7 = −12
  16. (a) −3 − ____ = −8 ⇒ ____ = +5
    (b) +6 − ____ = +10 ⇒ ____ = −4
  17. 9 positives and 14 negatives → cancel 9 pairs → left with 5 negatives ⇒ −5
  18. Adding a zero pair adds (+1) and (−1) together, which makes 0, so value doesn’t change.
  19. Top row: −2 + 5 + (−9) = −6 ✔
    Left column: −2 + x + (−1) = −6 ⇒ x − 3 = −6 ⇒ x = −3
    Right column: −9 + y + 3 = −6 ⇒ y − 6 = −6 ⇒ y = 0
  20. False. Correct fact: 0 is neither positive nor negative.
