What to expect from these MAT questions?
Class 4 is one of the 1st classes where children take mental ability tests. They have a lot of options these days, either through school Olympiad forms or scholarship test preparation. Some enthusiastic teachers like to throw a puzzle on the board on Fridays. The questions here are designed to make children comfortable with that experience without making it feel like an exam.
A few of the questions might seem easy, and we have kept them intentionally. The confidence at the start matters more than anything else. As you move through the set, the questions get a bit more involved, particularly in the analogy and sequence sections. The puzzle questions near the end are meant to be discussed. Some of the questions should not be solved on paper, but discussed in class or with parents. The parent should go through this with their child. Treat these questions as conversation starters rather than tests.
There is no single “correct method” for most of the questions. Two children can arrive at the right answer through completely different reasoning. What you are building here is the habit of thinking carefully, which matters far more than getting every answer right.

FAQs
Are these questions suitable for school Olympiads?
For most Class 4-level Olympiads like SOF IMO, NSO, and NTSE, the question types here match well. The difficulty might not be with the actual tests but rather with papers similar to those. Take it as a solid starting point. Once your child is comfortable with these, look for previous year Olympiad papers. This gives you an idea of how questions are worded in the actual exam. It can be slightly different even when the concept is the same.
How much time should my child spend on this?
20 minutes, two or three times a week, is enough at the Class 4 level. The goal right now is not to grind through as many questions as possible. It is to make reasoning feel like a normal, enjoyable activity. By Class 6, children who get burned out on practice worksheets in Class 4 resist them entirely. Do not force them to do things right now. Let them do it at their own pace.
My child gets frustrated when they can’t solve a question. What should I do?
Skip it and come back. This sounds obvious, but most parents push their child as if they are preparing for IAS exams tomorrow. This makes the frustration stick to the subject rather than just the question. A question that felt impossible on Tuesday might seem easy on Thursday, and there is no reason for that. It just means that the brain needed time. The answer explanations here are detailed enough that even if a child gives up on a question, reading the explanation afterwards still teaches the concept.
Is Class 4 too early to start this kind of practice?
Not at all. If it is presented as a fun problem-solving approach, children at this age genuinely enjoy it. If it is presented as test preparation, not many will like it. After all, at this age, they are just getting used to exams. The questions in this set are chosen with that in mind. There are riddles, pattern puzzles, and a few questions that will make even parents pause before answering.
