About the Metal Ability Test
What’s in these 100 questions and what to expect?
Class 7 is an interesting place for students to be. The questions are a bit harder than in Class 5 or 6. They need to solve longer sequences, multi-step analogies, and blood relation problems with four or five people in the chain. However, they are not at the level of intensity required by NTSE. Think of Class 7 as the year you build the reasoning that you will require in Classes 8 and 9.
These 100 questions cover eight categories:

They are not arranged by difficulty. The easier and harder questions are mixed together deliberately. Real exam papers do not sort questions by difficulty. Students should get used to that unpredictability and that is part of the practice.
A few questions in this set are tricky. The coding-decoding section has some patterns that look obvious at first glance but take a twist when you try to solve them. Do not rush, a lot of marks get dropped in exams, not because students stopped reading halfway through the question.
Which exams does this prepare you for?
The most direct exam connection for Class 7 students is the Science Olympiad Foundation’s IMO and NSO papers. These exams include a reasoning section. The question types here, analogy, series completion, odd one out, coding, appear directly in those papers. The NSTSE also tests logical reasoning at this level.
Beyond Olympiads, Class 7 is the right time to start building NTSE readiness. The NTSE MAT paper is taken in Class 10. The students who do well in it always started practicing reasoning questions two to three years earlier. It is because the thinking habits take time to form. A student who has solved hundreds of analogy and blood relation questions by Class 9 cracks the NTSE MAT paper differently from one who starts in Class 10.
Why reasoning practice matters beyond exams
The skills these questions build are not exam-specific. The habit of reading a problem fully before attempting it is one of the key habits a student should inculcate. It is very important to be able to spot what information is given versus what one assumes. All these transfer directly into how students approach problems in science and math, and eventually into their careers.
Blood relation questions are particularly good for this. They force you to build a mental model from partial information and test it as you go. The questions are challenging enough to build real skill, but not so demanding that it becomes stressful. One or two sessions a week throughout Class 7 make a difference by the time the Olympiad season comes around.
My child is good at maths but struggles with reasoning. Is that normal?
Very common, and worth understanding why it happens. Maths at the school level rewards procedural accuracy. Follow the steps, get the answer. Reasoning questions reward differently: the ability to figure out what the rule is before you can apply it. Students who are strong at procedures struggle at times initially because there is no algorithm to follow. The good news is that they soon realise that reasoning is also pattern-based. They are going to figure it out sooner than later.
Do these questions help with school exams too or only Olympiads?
School exams don’t directly test mental ability. The indirect benefits, however, are real. Students who practise reasoning regularly are going to perform better in word problems, data interpretation in science, and any question that requires multi-step thinking. It also helps with reading comprehension, the habit of careful reading, and avoiding jumping to conclusions.
