Problems on Trains Formulas
Symbols (first occurrence meanings):
- D = distance
- T = time
- V = speed
- L = length
- L₁, L₂ = lengths of train 1 and train 2
- Lₜ = length of train
- Lₒ = length of other object (platform/bridge/tunnel/vehicle)
- V₁, V₂ = speeds of two moving objects
- Vrel = relative speed
Core speed–time–distance
- V = D ÷ T
- D = V × T
- T = D ÷ V
Unit conversion
- V(m/s) = V(km/h) × (5/18)
- V(km/h) = V(m/s) × (18/5)
Relative speed
- Same direction: Vrel = |V₁ − V₂|
- Opposite direction: Vrel = V₁ + V₂
Distance to be covered while crossing
- Single moving object past a point: D = Lₜ
- Moving object past a stationary object: D = Lₜ + Lₒ
- Two moving objects crossing: D = L₁ + L₂
Crossing time (general)
- T = D ÷ V (when the other object is stationary)
- T = D ÷ Vrel (when both are moving)
