Gita Jayanthi

The birthday of Bhagvad-Gita, the sacred text of the Hindus is celebrated on Gita Jayathi on the 11th day of the brighter part of Margaseersha month ( December- January) based on Hindu almanac. On this day, Sanjaya had narrated what had transpired between Sri Krishna and Arjuna to King Dhritarashtra. This way the glorious teachings of Lord Krishna have been made available to the world all over.

History of Gita Jayanthi
This is one of the great occasion in the life of mankind. About six thousand years ago a dazzling of brilliant light flashed and lit up the entire human civilization. That light was the message of the sacred Bhagvad-Gita. It was passed on by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. This message has remained an embodiment of knowledge and many people read it with devotion and conviction that it would change their lives.

The teaching of the Bhagvad Gita are based upon the Upanishads, the revealed ancient metaphysical classics belonging to India. The Gita shows the way to immortality and bliss. It is a gospel full of action. It teaches that one should renounce all fruits of one’s actions. It is full of wisdom and power and strengthens those who are weak. It also inspires the feeble.

Celebration of Gita Jayanthi
Mass recital is undertaken of the 701 verses from all of the 18 chapters which are chanted throughout the day. Since it is Ekadashi, devotees go on fast. Puja is undertaken and Bhajans are sung on the occasion. Children take part in stage play and recitation to encourage their interest in reading the Gita. Festivals are held honoring the Gita, where Gita slokas are recited and discussion and songs are held in praise of Gita.

Rituals of Gita Jayanthi
Devotees visit the Kurukshetra and recite the Bhagvad Gita from the early morning to the next morning and perform aarti to the Bhagvad Gita and to Krishna as well Arjuna on the chariot. They offer “deep Daan” at Brahma Sarovar, recite shlokas and hold shoba yatras and seminars on the occasion.

Gita, the sacred text of the Hindus is much revered and cherished by the Hindu community. People gain insight into life and its problems and how to resolve them by reading the Gita.
