Internet was created by computer scientist from Britain, Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues belonging to the European particle physics laboratory (CERN) who paved the way for this internet explosion that has engulfed us today. It has changed our lives in many ways. Many are addicted to it. Children spend hours in front of it.

Participating in the commemoration celebrations were Tim Bernes-Lee and CERN collaborator like Robert Cailliau, which were held at the laboratory recently.

It was in March 1989, that young Bernes had handed over a document to his supervisor in Geneva titled “Information Management: a proposal.” The supervisor had initially called it “vague but exciting” and cleared it. Both Bernes and former CERN systems engineer Cailliau teamed up together and drew up a global hypertext language- which is the backbone of “http” and created the first web browser in October 1990.

The WWW technology was initially made available for wider use on Internet from the year 1991 as CERN was not able to ensure its development. The organization also took a decision not to claim royalties.

Internet now has come a long way. All kinds of information is available. Much innovative work is done. It has become a highly creative and indispensable tool of information.
