After a period of seven year trial in Africa, for the foremost time, scientists have developed a vaccine that has been successful in reducing TB infection by about 39% among HIV infected patients numbering 2,000 in Tanzania.

TB happens to be the biggest killer of those infected with HIV worldwide. In India, over 60% of those who are HIV infected patients who have a weak immunity system happen to get infected, with TB and eventually of course die of it.

Scientists belonging to the Darmouth Medical School (DMS) have of course reported the results of the clinical trials conducted by them of this newly discovered vaccine known as Mycobacterium vaccae (MV) in the January 29th online journal issue AIDS. The study details will get published in the March printed of the AIDS journal.

Ford von Reyn, principal investigator from DMS said,” Since development of a new vaccine against TB is a major international health priority especially for patients with HIV infection, we and our Tanzanian collaborators are very encouraged by the results.

The vaccine is economical to produce and is the type that is known as a whole-cell mycobacterial vaccine that is inactivated. Von Reyn said that the happened to be a “significant milestone”. “The first to demonstrate that any type of vaccine can prevent an infectious complication of HIV adults.” He also said that the next step was to bring about improvements in the manufacturing processes in order to produce larger quantities of the vaccine for further studies as well as clinical usage.

The union health ministry in New Delhi said that the vaccine no doubt has given much hope to the India to deal with the huge burden of dealing with TB as well as HIV patients.

The union health ministry has carried out an analysis of H1N1 flu infections till November 8th. It was observed that the virus had infected almost 3,000 more men as well as women-8997 men as well as 5,933 women. But judging by death figures 258 women have died on account of the infection as compared to 248 Men. India till about November 8th has recorded about 14,930 positive cases of H1N1 infection, with 506 deaths. No doubt, the latest figures that are available till the time of November 20, the number of infected Indians had reached about 16,201 while about 543 deaths had been recorded.

Till November 8th the state of Maharashtra had recorded the highest number of deaths that have been caused by HINI flu (212). This has been followed by Karnataka (119), AP(46), Gujarat (43) and Kerala (22). When it comes to positive cases of H1N1 infection Delhi is highest on the list with around 3,853 cases followed by Maharashtra (3,728) cases,TN (1,665), Karnataka (1,513), Kerala (1,096) and Haryana (739). Andhra Pradesh has shown a record of 686 positive cases if H1N1. Only five stages have not recorded a single case of H1N1 infection. They are Lakshwadeep, Sikkim,AP, Dadra and Nagar Haveli as well as Tripura.

The Union health minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad says that India has already spent RS.332 crore to combat HINI flu. Financial assistance given directly to the states has been in the form of Tamilfu that is being supplied and training being given to state officials.

The coming into existence of the antibiotic-resistant still happens to be major public health problem say scientists who gathered at the largest meeting of infectious diseases.

The major concerns are resistant gram-negative bacteria and the bacteria that infects the young and healthy people. This problem is further heightened by paucity of new antibiotics that come down the pipeline, according to them.

Dr. Brad Spellberg, who is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s (IDSA) Antimicrobial Availability Task Force and is an assistant professor of medicine at the UCLA says, “Antibiotic development is dying and we are running out of drugs. We have organisms that are already resistant to every antibiotic we can throw at them.” He further adds,” what will be increasingly seen in the coming decade is a dramatic decline in the availability of new antibiotics, which are desperately needed.”

Spellberg addressed a gathering at the teleconference of the IDSA annual meeting in Philadelphia.

Antibiotic resistance, even when it involves new drugs has no doubt become an issue concerning gram negative bacteria. As a result of this even clinicians have been made to reach back into the arsenal, thus resurrecting a drug which has not been in much use in 20 years, polmyxcin. Presently, pathogens are becoming resistant to the drug.

Other infections are affecting the young and moving on from the hospital onto the community and back again to the hospital. For instance, Clostridium difficile, which happens to be a common hospital infection, is now targeting people who have not been in the hospital. These people have median which is around 53, whereas in the hospitals it is 70 says Dr. Ghinwa Dumyati, who is the lead author of the study. He is also an associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

One is not sure from where these community cases are emanating, but many people, though healthy, were taking antibiotics.

Also, methicillin-resistent Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the cause of severe illness in young as well as healthy people. Of course, these infections are not resulting in death or long stay in hospitals claims another study, says Dr. Fernanda Lessa of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to another study, MRSA infections in the emergency rooms has increased by 211 per cent between 2000 and 2008.

Pierre Gagnaire has created the first synthetic gourmet dish in the world. The dish happens to be a starter consisting of jelly balls in lemon and apple flavors that are very creamy from the inside and crisp outside. It combines ascorbic acid, citric acid, glucose and some grams of maltitol a sugar substitute.

Pierre has worked with Hervi this, which is founder of molecular gastronomy. In fact, he brought the molecular gastronomy into the recipe world of the kitchen.

Speaking to the “Times” newspaper in Britain, he said,” It is good. It’s going to be smooth, crusty and frosty. We are working for future generations,” The famous chef displayed the culinary dish at a restaurant in Hong Kong.

The meal will also consist of lobster fricassee which will be served with polyphenol sauce that is made up of tartaric acid, ployphenols and glucose. Pierre adds, ” If you use pure compounds you open up billions and billions of new possibilities. It’s like a painter using primary colors or a musician composing note by note.”

Pierre feels that compound cooking tends to liven up the taste buds of the people. It will help in bringing an end to food shortage as well as rural poverty as it would enable farmers to enhance profitability by “fractionating their vegetables.”

He further adds sugar is not natural and chips are also the same. One will be disgusted if one ate a wild carrot.

Visually impaired can now hope for eyesight. Major breakthrough has been made by scientists that would help cure blindness the discovery of stem cell therapy.

A British team of scientists has developed a treatment mode, which involves the replacement of the layer of degenerated cells with new ones which have been created from the embryonic stem cells in order to cure muscular degeneration which is a frequent cause for people going blind.

The scientists claim that the procedure which lasts for an hour will be made available in 6 to about 7 years time, according to Sunday Times reports.

The embryonic stem cells can be developed into all kids of body tissue. This new therapy will enable the embryonic stem cells to be transformed into replicas of missing cells. These are then placed onto an artificial membrane, which is inserted at the back of the retina.

Laboratory trials carried out by the team indicate that the stem cells can indeed prevent blindness among rodents which have similar disease to AMD. They also conducted successful tests with regard to elements of technology in pigs.

Commenting on the therapy, Prof. Pete Coffey, who is the lead scientist of the team from University College, London said the treatment would take” less than an hour, so it really could be considered as an outpatient procedure. We are trying to get it out as a common therapy.”

Peng Khaw, team member says, “This shows that stem cell therapy is coming of age. It offers great hope for many sufferers around the world who cannot be treated with conventional treatment.

The efforts of the team will be financed by the Pfizer, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world.

The first and foremost flying robot that is able to manipulate objects particularly at the time of surgery has been developed by Canadian researchers for micro-scale application.

This invention enables researchers to gain more control over “micro-scale manipulation’ and also allowing the researchers to place and move tiny objects with much greater precision. The device has been developed by a research team in engineering from University of Waterloo.

The “tiny new gravity- device” can be used to manipulate tiny objects that are very small for humans to manipulate.

The device, known as the flying Micro-Electoral Mechanical Systems (MEMS) robot, tends to defy the force of gravity by levitating or flying and powered by magnetic field.

The robot moves around and manipulates objects with the help of magnets attached to micro-grippers. It is remotely controlled by a “laser-focusing beam” claims the university.

The device will also be useful in the micro-assembly of mechanical components, micro-surgery and will be able to handle biological samples. Research leader Behrad Khamesee, a research leader and professor of mechnotronics and mechanical engineering and who is also adept at developing micro-scale devices with usage of magnetic levitation said,” We are the first in the world to make such floating robot equipped with micro-grippers. It can enter virtually any space and can be operated in a sealed enclosure by a person outside, which makes it useful for handling bio-hazardous materials or working in vacuum chambers and clean rooms.”

According to the university statement the magnetic levitation is used to position the micro-robot in a three dimensional spice while employing a magnetic drive mechanism externally. This mechanism controls the magnetic field using feedback from the position spensors in order for the micro-robot to be positioned.

Brown fat, which can regulate metabolism, is also found in adults, not just children and babies as thought earlier. This so called “good fat”, which is considered to be better than white fat, helps in burning calories and using up energy.

These facts have been revealed in a study published in a recent issue of The New England Journal Medicine. The study shows that brown fat exists in adults also and happens to be metabolically active. Senior author of the study, C. Ronald Kahn, who is head of the obesity as well as hormone action section at the Joslin Diabetes Centre in Boston, Massachusetts says that the “fact that there is active brown fat in adult humans means that this is now a new and important target for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.”

The researchers of the study said that obesity as well as other metabolic disorders could be treated by the stimulation of brown fat growth in order to control weight and improve glucose metabolism as well.

Brown fat, according to the researchers, has a role to play in the regulation of metabolism of body weight. High levels of brown fat help protect against obesity and is in a way linked with aging. Thin and young patients, with normal blood glucose levels had higher brown fat content. Brown fat happened to be more active in cold weather, as it plays an important role in burning energy in order to produce heat.

The researchers had analyzed the database of 1,972 patients who had X-ray (CT) or nuclear (PET) imaging scan during a span of three years for various reasons.

Scientists have come up with a pill that is made up of five life-saving drugs to fight against bad cholesterol, clotting and high blood pressure. The pill to be taken once in a day contains cholesterol-reducing statin, 3 BP reducing drugs and aspirin. It was equally effective as compared to taking these drugs individually and one did not experience side-effects while taking it.

The findings have been announced by the Canadian and Indian scientists in the medical journal, The Lancet. They believe that patients who are at risk of cardio-vascular diseases should prefer taking such a pill as it involves taking only one rather than five.

The study was conducted on 2,053 patients who happened to be Indian aged between 48-80 years, who did not suffer from any heart disease and only were faced with either BP, obesity, diabetes or smoking. If such a pill was administered to the population, the risk of heart disease would come down by 62% and stroke would be reduced by 48% due to reduced BP and bad cholesterol levels.

The study was conducted in 50 centers, which were Indian by researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton and St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore. They are of the view that the pill was safe to use and was tolerable even when taken together and of course very effective.

Dr. Salim Yousuf said that the discovery of the single pill had revolutionized heart disease prevention. The drug was well received by the world, but in India doctors were a little less excited about it. Dr. Deepak Natarajan said the pill would prevent flexibility to the doctors in modifying drug combinations to suit the patients on an individual level.

The relationship between a husband and wife is a very sensitive affair. It has to be based on mutual trust, love and care as well understanding. Much effort goes into maintaining the relationship. Both the husband and wife have to make that extra effort to show their love for each other. Any kind of neglect on each other’s part could lead to a termination of the relationship or end up as relationship with no sparks.

A husband needs the support of his wife to carry on with his professional life and also to meet his emotional and physical needs. He cannot take his partner for granted and has to ensure that she is happy being married to him. In other words, he has to impress upon his wife to keep himself in her good books. What all he needs to do to impress upon her?

Wine and dine with her frequently – A husband needs to spend time with his wife more. He may be busy with his official work, but yet he needs to take time off and take her out for dinner. A romantic candle dinner would keep the love flame alive.

Take interest in her hobbies – A wife likes it when her husband shows keen interest in how she spends her time at home. The husband needs to show interest in her hobbies and if possible participate in them.

Spend time with the children – A wife after all has devoted her precious time in the upbringing of the children. She naturally would like it if her husband also took time off and spent it with the children. The husband needs to make her feel that he is also shouldering the responsibility of bringing up the children.

Show interest in her friends – A wife spends her free time with her friends. She would like it if her husband was also interested in her association with her friends. He is expected to respect her friends and treat them well.

Socializing – A husband needs to take his wife to social get-togethers and not make her feel alienated by leaving her at home. Even at official gatherings, he can take his wife along with him.

Buy gifts – Buying the appropriate gift for the wife requires much time and effort, which the husband should not overlook. A birthday gift, a marriage anniversary surprise party can do wonders to make a wife come closer to the husband.

Respect her family members – A wife cares about her family, be it her brother, sister or parents. A husband needs to be careful to avoid hurting her feelings by insulting any of her family members.

Go on holiday – It is important for the husband to spend his precious moments with his wife. A summer trip to the Bahamas or Hawaii sounds very exciting. A wife will be thrilled to spend time with her children and husband, away from her daily chores.

Help her with the daily chores – despite his pressures at work, it would be nice if the husband took some time out and helped his wife with her daily chores in the house. The wife may feel bored doing them. She would appreciate the gesture extended by her husband as a thought of love and affection for her.

Not forgetting the marriage anniversary date – A husband who remembers his marriage anniversary date is well received by a wife. After all, she would feel that he is still full of same loving concern for her as he was on her first date with him.

A husband who cares for the feelings of his wife will make a success of his marriage. By neglecting her, he would either live in a miserable relationship or end up losing her. A conscious effort needs to be made to impress upon her to strengthen the marital bonds.

Although, many single women prefer to avoid marriage, yet marriage continues to be popular with both men and women. Women marry for their own reasons, generally for emotional and financial security. Men have other reasons, mostly companionship.

Men prefer to settle down in marriage as quickly as they can. Once they like a woman and get close to her, they prefer to settle down in marriage. Why do they want to tie the knot so fast?

Why Men Rush Into Marriage?

Men feel insecure that they may lose out on their woman. An attractive woman is a good catch, but also she can attract other men as well. Naturally, a man would prefer to make her his own as soon as possible.

Men prefer to settle down in matrimony as they would like to have a home of their own, a wife and kids. It provides them a sense of belonging.

It is easier for a man to manage his career well if he has someone at home to take care of his needs and look after the house.

Emotional strength is what a man needs at times. An understanding woman can give all the necessary emotional support to him during his difficult moments. He needs someone with whom he can share his inner most thoughts.

Men feel lonely returning from work to an empty house. They would like their house bubbling with a lot of noise and appreciate a wife receiving them and kids hugging them affectionately.

Men like to share their earnings with someone else. They like it when they are earning for someone. It provides a purpose in life for them.

Social pressure is also a factor why men rush into marriage. Peer pressure is always there, and they do not like to retain their single status far to long.

Marriage is a tradition common to all societies. Men and women fall in love, settle down in marriage and have children. Men are always eager to propose to their woman so that they can settle down early in life.
