Earlier this year, Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) launched the revamped version of their flagship luxury sedan in India, the Hyundai Sonata, with much fanfare. Although at a glance you are likely to miss the difference between the previous Hyundai Sonata Embera version and the current Hyundai Sonata Transform, a closer look reveals numerous little touch ups as well as a few major changes that the company has given to the car.
On the exterior, Hyundai seems to have given the new Sonata Transform a more elegant undertone. The headlights are reworked – with larger clusters, and the taillights are different too. The body mouldings of the car seem much slimmer now while the front bumper seems to have been worked upon in such a way as to give the car a sleeker flowing look which also adds to the car coming across visually as a wider and more elegant package. The exterior transformation of the new Sonata is complete with a larger air dam in the front bumper as well as a radiator grille that is now made out of chrome. Oh – there’s still some exterior transformation left to be mentioned – the Sonata Transform now comes with stylish new alloy rims ensconced within 215/60 R 16 tubeless tires, that truly complete the exterior repackaging done on the Sonata.
The bigger transformations of course lie inside the new Sonata. In fact, as soon as you enter, you feel the enhanced spaciousness in comparison to the previous version. Additionally, the interior seems to score much higher on the style and visual appeal front than what the Transform’s predecessor managed to do. Herein, separate climate controls for the driver and the passenger section do stand out. There are various steering mounted controls for audio and other aspects. The steering wheel itself is now wrapped in luxurious leather with tilt/telescopic functions. The dashboard is illuminated with Blue LED, and combined with padded door panels, the Transform manages to garner for itself, a completely fresh look from the interior.
The Transform is also many a mile ahead of the Embera when it comes to audio entertainment. While you had to make do with a 6 CD changer in the Embera, the Transform comes with a 6-speaker CD/MP3 player which has a USB port for plugging in portable devices as well as an auxiliary port to which you can easily plug in your iPod.
Safety is integral to the Sonata Transform. The ABS is electronically-controlled along with electronic brakeforce distribution. Dual front airbags are offered with the option to switch off the passenger air bag. On an impact, the car has the ability to unlock the doors to allow the safe exit of the passengers within. For an extra INR 32,000 (USD 640), you can avail of front side airbags and curtain airbags.
Yet, we are nowhere close to the real transformation of the new Sonata which easily lies under the hood – in the form of the advanced second generation Theta engine that produces up to 175 PS power at 6000 rpm and 233.38 Nm torque at 4000 rpm resulting in lightning-fast acceleration as well as a very nippy throttle response. This 2.4L, 4-cylinder, MPFI engine is aided by a Variable Intake System (VIS) along with VTVT technology ensuring that the Sonata Transform remains highly fuel efficient. On the flip side, there is no Automatic version in the petrol-powered Sonata Transform. The diesel version of the Sonata – Sonata Transform CRDi comes in both a 6-speed manual and 4-speed (H-Matic) automatic transmission versions. The 2.0L, 4-cylinder, CRDi engine has a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) that produces up to 150 PS power at 3850 rpm and 314.8 Nm torque at 2000 rpm.
Other stylish overtones of the Sonata Transform include twin exhausts, front and rear bumper inserts, body color door handles, waistline molding rear defoggers, outside mirror housings, as well as 2-tone beige interior which is now offered only in leather trims.
Hyundai Sonata Transform Prices:
For all its features, the Hyundai Sonata Transform comes at a relative bargain, especially in comparison to its competitors, both the Honda Accord as well as the Toyota Camry. The 2.4 liter petrol engine version is priced at INR 1,390,000 (USD 27,800) while the 2.0 liter diesel engine version comes in two options priced at INR 1,489,000 (USD 29,780) for manual transmission and INR 1,590,000 lakhs (for automatic transmission).
